Overview of Surgical Sales Jobs
Many medical devices today are actually sold within the surgical suite. Sales representatives in these types of roles may be asked to travel significantly, while others are given a more local territory with less travel. Availability is important in a surgical sales job. Many are also required to be on-call and work weekends to meet their client’s needs.
Training and Education for a Surgical Sales Job
Surgical sales can be complex. The products are typically medical devices which require the utmost precision. Because of this, typically, a four-year degree is required. Companies vary in the type of degree, but often prefer a background in life science, business or a business-to-business sales background. An engineering or biomed background may be an excellent fit. Individuals with a clinical background, such as nursing, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, etc., coupled with previous success in outside business-to-business sales also make for a great hire.
Training for surgical sales, typically include studying various clinical areas such as, anatomy, physiology, surgical techniques and operating room protocols. In addition to product training, sales representatives may be taught to follow a specific sales method, as well as attend conferences, and trade shows to market their product. To gain further understanding and comfort in the operating room and get a job in surgical sales, some candidates enroll in training programs specific to surgical sales, such as the one provided by Medical Sales College.
Many surgeries, especially orthopedic, trauma and some cardiology procedures require medical devices which are supplied through various medical manufacturers. Because of this, specific product training may also be offered by the product’s manufacturer.

Salary in Surgical Sales Jobs
There are two types of pay structures in surgical sales, salary plus commission and commission-only (1099 employment status.) Salaries vary, however are typically between $85-100,000 plus commission (with some surgical sales representatives earning >175-200K. However, not all are paid a salary, some are only paid commission. These commission-only (1099) sales representatives are independent contractors which earn commissions, yet pay their own expenses.
